Know Your Fabrics: A Buyer's Guide to Choosing the Right Material

Cotton, linen, polyester, or silk — understanding fabric types helps you buy smarter and dress better for every occasion.

The fabric of a garment determines how it looks, how it feels, how long it lasts, and how it performs in different conditions. Here's a practical guide to the most common fabrics you'll encounter when shopping for clothes in India.

Cotton

Best for: Everyday wear, summer, casual outings, kids' clothing.

Cotton is the most versatile and widely-used fabric in India. It's soft, breathable, absorbs moisture, and easy to care for. The downside: it wrinkles easily and can shrink if washed in hot water. Look for 100% cotton labels for the best quality.

Linen

Best for: Summer, travel, casual to semi-formal wear.

Linen is made from flax plant fibres and is stronger and more breathable than cotton. It becomes softer with each wash and is ideal for hot, humid weather. Linen wrinkles naturally — embrace the lived-in look or iron it slightly damp for a crisper finish.

Polyester

Best for: Activewear, budget-friendly everyday pieces, wrinkle-resistant workwear.

Polyester is durable, wrinkle-resistant, and holds its colour well. However, it doesn't breathe as well as natural fabrics, which can feel warm in humid weather. Polyester blends (with cotton) often offer the best of both worlds — durability and breathability.

Silk

Best for: Festive occasions, weddings, special events.

Silk is the most luxurious natural fabric. It's incredibly smooth, temperature-regulating, and has a natural sheen that no synthetic fabric can replicate. Silk requires careful handling — hand wash in cold water or dry clean. It's an investment, but a worthwhile one.

Georgette & Chiffon

Best for: Sarees, dupattas, evening wear, flowy dresses.

Both are lightweight, flowy fabrics. Georgette has a slightly grainy texture and is more opaque. Chiffon is sheer and delicate. Both drape beautifully but snag easily — handle with care.

Rayon (Viscose)

Best for: Casual kurtis, summer dresses, affordable ethnic wear.

Rayon is a semi-synthetic fabric that mimics the drape and feel of silk at a fraction of the cost. It's comfortable and lightweight but not very durable and tends to shrink when machine washed. Always hand wash or use a gentle cycle.
